Upgraded Genre Analytics, New Remake/Remaster filters and Available Platforms

We have gone through a lot of small updates recently, but 3 of them are worth talking about in more detail.

Upgraded Genre Analytics

There are several new updates in our genre analytics tool.

  1. New metrics to choose from – units sold
  2. Genre Analytics is now also availe for Console as well – You’ll be able to see genre and subgenre performance for PlayStation and Xbox
  3. We swapped the old Steam genres for our new Sensor Tower taxonomy genres – meaning the subgenre classification quality got a massive improvement.

Together, these make the genre analytics tool a lot more useful than it was before.

Wishlists Owned Player Insights

You can now see how “hardcore” the wishlisters of a particular game are. Do they have hundreds of other wishlists and, therefore, are unlikely to ever convert to sales or are they hyper-focused on a few games they want to buy?

Remake/Remaster filter

Our filters now include a “Remake/Remaster” option. The Sensor Tower taxonomy team has gone through and tagged all of the remakes and remasters of games to allow for easy filter options.

Available Platforms now shown in Games Database

Games Database got an update where you can now see exactly what platforms games are available on.

Platform Downtime Notice – Saturday 6th September 2025

As part of us joining Sensor Tower earlier this year, we are making changes to our back-end and databases. As part of that, there is some expected downtime on the 6th September 2025 that you should be aware of.

Internet down: How people reacted to the outage which hit major sites | indy100
  • Why are we making changes?
We’re moving to Sensor Tower infrastructure which will allow us to make the website faster and will greatly improve our capacity to develop new features going forward. As part of this upgrade, our service will also transition from vginsights.com to app.sensortower.com/vgi.
  • What is happening?
We will have a big migration event happening on Saturday the 6th September and our website as well as API will see some downtime between 7am – 4pm UTC on 6th September.
  • How big is the disruption?
We’ll try to minimize the time our web portal and the API are offline, but we anticipate up to 8 hours of downtime on the portal and up to 2 hours of downtime on our Business API.
  • Important note about the Business API
For now, the Business API will continue to operate from its existing URL. However, it will also be moved under app.sensortower.com/vgi soon, and we’ll share more details ahead of that change.

Please take this into consideration if you need to do any urgent analysis over that weekend or if you have any automated API calls set up for that day.

Please share this internally as needed!

Apologies for the disruption and let us know if this causes any critical issues!

Update: Wishlist Data Stability Improvements

Since May, we observed increased fluctuations in our wishlist data. After investigating, we identified and resolved the issues that were contributing to the elevated volatility in the outstanding wishlists metrics.

As a result, you’ll now see that the wishlist trends for most games appear much smoother and more consistent—just as expected.

As a side effect of the fix, historical wishlist counts have slightly changed across all games. In our testing, these adjustments have had no meaningful impact on overall accuracy, and most changes are minimal.

That said, we recommend all clients pull the updated wishlist data for their analysis. For those using the API, we suggest refreshing your databases with the latest historical figures.

As ever, please contact us at support@sensortower.com if you have any questions!

The importance of wishlists in 2025

Wishlists have long been the main predictor of a Steam game’s launch success. The number of people who have added the game in their wishlist should in theory be indicative of how many sales the game will get once it launches – it is, after all, a strong signal that a person is interested in the game.

What are Steam wishlists? In short, it’s Steam allowing people to add games to their “I want this game” list. Wishlisters get notifications when the game launches, when it’s on discount etc. Their friends will also see these lists and be able to gift them the games.

More recently, the value of wishlists has been questioned. Some developers try to game the system and “fake” wishlists have become a thing. Not all wishlists are created equal either. By being more aggressive at pushing people to wishlist games, developers have increasingly tapped into the more lukewarm audience. If I was semi-forced to wishlist a game, am I really a player with strong intent to buy?

This report explores the data behind wishlists – how important are Steam wishlists in 2025?

Player Overlap Filters

This update comes with a bunch of smaller bug fixes and visual updates. However, the bigger new feature allows you to now filter the Player Overlap tool in a better way.

You can now easily combine the power of overlap % and overlap Index. For example, you could only look at games with at least 10% overlap and sort by overlap index. This would result in only larger games being shown, but still ordering by their relative persona preference.

More data! Including Month 1 and Year 1 sales

We have added a couple of much requested features to the paltform recently:

Month 1 and Year 1 units sold on Games Database

We’ve added 2 new columns to the Games Database – Month 1 and Year 1 unit sales. This allows you to have quick like-for-like comparison for launch performances.

Not only that, you can use these together with our “wishlists at launch” metric to get a better understanding of the wishlist to launch conversion ratios for the games you care about.

https://vginsights.com/games-database

Top charts now include Daily and Monthly Active Players

Top charts already had an option to see top CCU games. Our new DAU and MAU options add more colour to player engagement.

Steam page created dates

You will be now able to see when the actual Steam Store page was created for majority of games, including how long it took them to get from Store page creation to launch.

This is a super useful metric for understanding how to optimize the Steam page and how early other games release their Steam pages pre launch.

We’ll be bringing you more new features shortly! Stay tuned.

The Big Game Engines Report of 2025

Video game engines have evolved significantly over the past decade. While mobile game development has long been dominated by third-party engines—most notably Unity—the same was not true for PC and console games.

Until recently, the majority of large titles were developed using in-house, custom-built engines. Not anymore.

This report covers:

– State of game engines today
– Game engine market share trends over time
– Forecasting the future trends
– Did Unity’s pricing debacle impact market share?
– The growth of Unreal Engine
– Is Godot really winning share?
– Game engine shares by sub-genre of games

  • However, the market shares have been shifting
